Acorn Group Ltd vs. Walter Tippers Ltd: A Charity Football Match to Remember

On a beautiful summer evening on September 9th, 2024, Acorn Group Ltd took to the pitch against local business Walter Tippers Ltd in a friendly football match at Burntwood Leisure Centre. The event was more than just a game; it was a celebration of community spirit, organised to raise funds for the Dougie Mac charity. This friendly rivalry was sparked when Acorn Group's Fleet Director, Ashton MacMahon, and Walter Tippers Ltd's owner, Joe Tipper, sealed a deal for the purchase of two brand-new Kia EV9s.

The match had an exciting build-up, with Ashton MacMahon spotting Walter Tippers’ competitive side in a recent game against Allports Group in Lichfield. Inspired by their performance, he quickly rallied a team from across Acorn Group, determined to have some fun and take on their local business partners. It was a fantastic evening filled with competitive football, good humour, and, luckily, no serious injuries despite the average age of both teams being in their 30s.

Match Report: A Game of Two Halves

The game kicked off with Acorn Group starting into the bright evening sunshine. The first ten minutes were a closely contested affair, but a tactical decision by Acorn Group FC manager Matthew Sparkes, Head of Business at Acorn Burntwood, to play three at the back with high wing-backs, backfired. Walter Tippers seized the opportunity and scored two quick goals, putting them ahead early in the game.

Despite this setback, Sparkes had made a tactical change to go four at the back and ensured his team did not lose their composure. For the next 15 minutes, both teams had chances, but it was the central midfield duo of Tom Bunn and Ashton MacMahon who started to control the game, creating several opportunities for their team. Acorn Group's persistence paid off when MacMahon threaded a perfect pass to Bunn, who was brought down in the box by a clumsy challenge. A penalty was awarded, and MacMahon confidently stepped up, driving the ball into the bottom corner with an unstoppable shot. It was game on!

Just 10 minutes later, Tom Bunn showed off his dribbling skills, weaving through the Tippers’ defense before being brought down again in the penalty area. This time, Bunn stepped up to take the penalty, and he made no mistake, powering the ball into the net to make it 2-2.

The second half started with a series of humorous events that had everyone in good spirits. Acorn Group's goalkeeper, Toby Mason, charged out of his net to collect the ball but ended up falling comically on his backside. Meanwhile, Callum Nash lost his glasses while attempting a header, adding to the lighthearted atmosphere of the game.

With just 15 minutes left on the clock, it became evident that Acorn Group was starting to tire. The fitness levels of the team were pushed to their limits, and with Walter Tippers having the luxury of five substitutions compared to Acorn's one, they began to take control. The extra legs gave Tippers the edge, leading to a dubious penalty and a quick fourth goal.

Despite a valiant effort from Acorn Group, the game ended 4-2 in favor of Walter Tippers. The match was played in great spirit, with both sides enjoying the competition and looking forward to more encounters in the future.

Man of the Match: Ben Sparkes

There were several standout performances on the night, but the Man of the Match went to Ben Sparkes. His commitment was evident throughout, covering every blade of grass on the pitch and showing immense determination. He walked off with a well-earned "war wound" down his right shin, a testament to his effort and dedication.

A Great Evening for a Great Cause

All in all, it was a fantastic evening of football, camaraderie, and community spirit. Walter Tippers may have taken home the glory with a 4-2 win, but the real winner of the night was Dougie Mac charity, with both teams coming together to raise funds for a worthy cause. Here's to more friendly rivalry and many more matches in the future!
